I think it'd be cool, but I think it has to enrich gameplay in some way I think, but I'll throw a few thoughts on this.
I personally can't see the typical MMO public market town center working in Dust, the PS3 can't handle it and it wouldn't really do anything beyond what we already do- shout over each other on local chat.
But... I can definitely see small scale areas working- especially private ones.
Imagine being in your squad leader's merc quarters where the players could watch each other fit suits in real time, shop in the market, or do other things- this alone could help new players immensely as they could watch other and learn from them in game.
I could also see owning a war barge or privately owned rooms as something highly desirable- I know it is.
It was one of the things I've desired for a long time.
First off, I would have the floor space be divided into storage units, so space itself can become a measurable asset similar to the units used to measure storage capacity in cargo holds on EVE ships. People can rent out space to other players once they start running out of space in their own merc quarters, or they could steal and scam, or even set up a black market of stolen items. This would be great because it adds another type of contract to Dust...
People could even sell war barges full of items that they have collected.
Anyways, mercs would be able to put in items- think things like Jara Kumora. They could be book shelves on EVE lore, holograms of cool weapon models, crates of goodies like boosters and weapons, pets, player written logs and notes, statues or player created wall art, virtual reality simulators, shooting ranges, board games like Slay, religious relics, it goes on and on really. These are all just items, this isn't even going into wall textures and lighting for decorations.
Similiar to real life space stations, players could pay isk to buy new war barge modules- which would be new rooms: generator rooms, green house rooms, battlefield command rooms, eve communications comms rooms, libraries, restrooms, storage rooms, living spaces, biomass recycling rooms...
Also on the trello board is mention of "achievements", maybe old war barge trophy room will finally come to fruition?
All these things could... I guess, be stolen or even destroyed if war barge combat ever became a thing.
With all these things, there could be a ton of different war barge experiences that can happen.
Imagine logging in and visiting a war barge dedicated to faction warfare. People could finally see each other, train, learn about their faction, and know when somebody is looking for a squad in a much more organic way than logging on and wondering if anybody is in the chat channel. Now, you can wait and eventually somebody will physically show up.
Now imagine visiting an area created by Dust University dedicated to teaching players, they would have dropsuit displays set up with classic fits, player written notes on basic tactics, and shooting ranges.
Now imagine going to war barge set up by a corporation dedicated to planetary conquest- which, I suspect would have tons of weapons and utility rooms for processing the spoils of war, not to mention virtual reality to practice tactics with a bit.
Now imagine visiting an underground gambling war barge, where a virtual reality arenas are set up by players with specific rules, players can gather spectate and gamble. We would have a new breed of warrior beyond the mercenary and faction loyalist- we'd have gladiators.
Now imagine visiting a warbarge styled after a purple quafe bar with exotic dancers, this is where people can chit chat, play Slay, deploy into battle and other odd things.
Now imagine visiting a roleplayer's war barge, everybody would speak in character with all the appropriate decor surrounding them. Players could act out their fights and duels in character using the virtual reality.
Now imagine visiting a player's own auction house. The auctioneer would stand at a podium, set up a display with a Templar suit or a vanity suit of some sort and players would bid. I imagine they would sell officer weapons and strong boxes too.
Now imagine visiting a player's warbarge set up to be a museum, it would have all the suits collected and such.
The possibilities go on and on and on... but, that's not all that I think there could be.
I think managing these rooms in itself, could be a game. Otherwise the rooms themselves could feel stagnant and become lifeless in the eyes of the player. It could just end up being something that players go to on occasion and forget all about.
I think NPC's could be added to the experience, specialist maintenance workers who manage the efficiency of the war barge's weapons and defenses- turrets, e-war counter measures, shields and armor, warp drives, all these things. Then there are doctors who care for NPC's, market specialists like Jara Kumora, slaves, exterminators who kill drones, navigation specialists.
Anyways, just some thoughts. |
